US Announces Increasing Military Aid to Ukraine
"We're going to send some more weapons. We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves," Trump said during a joint press appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
Trump acknowledged that Ukraine is enduring severe attacks.
"We're going to have to send more weapons, defensive weapons primarily, but they're getting hit very, very hard. So many people are dying in that mess," he remarked.
The Pentagon also confirmed the decision to provide further military assistance to Ukraine.
"At President Trump's direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops," chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated in an official release.
Earlier reports from local outlets indicated that the Pentagon had temporarily halted some deliveries of air defense missiles and other precise munitions to Ukraine over concerns about dwindling US reserves.
The Department of Defense noted last week that it continues to offer Trump a variety of substantial military aid options for Ukraine, in line with his aim to end this devastating conflict.
Meanwhile, Ukraine cautioned that any postponements or cuts in defensive assistance "would only encourage" Russia to extend the war.
