Booted Russian transportation minister found dead
Prior to his role as transport minister, Starovoit served as governor of Kursk Region. An investigation was reportedly about to begin into allegations of embezzlement related to defense construction funds from 2022 to 2024. It was believed that Starovoit could have faced detention and questioning for the alleged theft of millions of rubles.
Kursk Region was the site of a large Ukrainian incursion last August, which was later repelled by Russian forces by April.
Following Starovoit’s dismissal, his former deputy Andrey Nikitin, who previously governed Novgorod Region and became deputy transport minister in early 2025, has been named acting transport minister. Nikitin has been responsible for leading digital transformation and automation efforts within Russia’s national transport system.
