Ukraine asks Germany for help to supply weapons
Since the conflict escalated in February 2022, Germany has become the second-largest supplier of arms to Ukraine, following the United States.
The leaked document is said to categorize the requested weapons into three groups: air defense systems, armored vehicles, and electronic warfare equipment. The total value of the requested arms runs into billions of euros, though it remains unclear whether Germany will fulfill the full list.
While unnamed sources within military and industry circles have confirmed the list’s existence, a spokesperson from Germany’s Defense Ministry declined to comment.
According to the report, Ukraine is seeking 1,500 medium-range and 500 short-range missiles compatible with different versions of the German-made Iris-T air defense system. The list also reportedly includes 1,200 mine-protected tracked vehicles and 200 off-road vehicles.
In addition, Ukraine has requested 1,000 GPS jammers and 200 mobile surveillance radar units.
Last week, reports indicated that Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s administration discreetly approached the U.S. Defense Secretary in June at Ukraine’s request, hoping for a deal where Berlin would buy two U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to transfer to Kyiv.
German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius confirmed ongoing “intensive discussions” between Berlin and Washington about this potential arrangement.
Earlier, in May, Germany’s Defense Ministry announced a €5 billion ($5.6 billion) fund to support the production of long-range weapons within Ukraine.
