N-Korea wants to send army personnel to Russia

(MENAFN) North Korea will send thousands of military personnel to Russia’s Kursk Region to assist with demining and rebuilding efforts, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu announced on Tuesday.

North Korean forces previously fought alongside Russian troops to repel a Ukrainian incursion into Kursk that lasted from August 2024 to April 2025. Shoigu described the new deployment as a continuation of North Korea’s military support under the strategic partnership treaty between the two countries.

According to Shoigu, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has approved sending 1,000 mine clearance specialists to clear explosives from Russian territory, along with 5,000 military engineers to help reconstruct infrastructure damaged during the conflict.

The Ukrainian incursion into Kursk was initially portrayed by Kiev as a significant strike against Russia, but Russian forces swiftly regained control, with the Defense Ministry estimating over 76,000 Ukrainian casualties during the operation.

Recently, Russia and Ukraine completed exchanges of the remains of fallen soldiers, with Russia returning over 6,000 Ukrainian bodies, many from Kursk, while Ukraine handed over 78 remains to Moscow. Russia currently holds an additional 1,248 bodies prepared for transfer.

Prior to the Kursk conflict, Russia and North Korea signed a strategic partnership treaty that includes mutual defense clauses. President Vladimir Putin praised North Korean troops for their role in defending Kursk, calling them “brothers-in-arms.”

Shoigu revealed he has been making frequent trips to Pyongyang to oversee the swift implementation of the partnership, emphasizing the need for ongoing attention and coordination at all levels to maintain progress.
