Ukraine Reports 23 Perished in Russian Airstrike

(MENAFN) A devastating Russian airstrike on the eastern Ukrainian village of Yarova killed at least 23 people on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials reported, marking one of the deadliest single attacks in recent weeks amid the ongoing conflict in the Donetsk region.

The strike occurred around 10:40 a.m. local time (0740 GMT), according to a Ukrainian public broadcaster. Lyman Mayor Oleksandr Zhuravlev confirmed the toll, stating, “At the moment, 23 people have died and 18 have been injured,” and emphasized that three of the wounded are in critical condition.

In a statement posted to X, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the bombing as “a brutally savage Russian airstrike with an aerial bomb on the rural settlement of Yarova in the Donetsk region.”

Zelenskyy revealed the strike occurred “at the very moment when pensions were being disbursed,” adding, “Such Russian strikes must not be left without an appropriate response from the world … A response is needed from the United States. A response is needed from Europe. A response is needed from the G20. Strong actions are needed to make Russia stop bringing death.”

Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin, writing on Telegram, gave a slightly lower initial death toll of 21, noting that “as many people” were injured. He confirmed that emergency crews were deployed to the site to assist victims and assess the full scale of the damage.

Ukrainian officials have not yet disclosed further operational or strategic details regarding the attack, and there has been no immediate comment from Russian authorities.

Yarova, the target of the strike, lies approximately 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) northwest of Lyman — a strategically vital location near the front line — and about 23 kilometers (14 miles) north of Sloviansk, near Kramatorsk. Since the fall of Donetsk city to Russian-backed forces in 2014, Kramatorsk has served as the de facto regional administrative center for Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk.

The attack underscores the intensifying violence in eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces continue to press their campaign in one of the most hotly contested areas of the nearly decade-long conflict.
