Trump, Xi Agree to Coordinate Efforts Toward Resolving Ukraine War
“Ukraine came up very strongly. We talked about it for a long time, and we are both going to work together to see if we can get something done,” the US leader said.
Trump added that he and Xi “agree that the sides are locked in fighting and sometimes you gotta let them fight, I guess.”
“But [Xi is] going to help us, and we are going to work together on Ukraine. Not a lot more we can do,” he said.
The US president also noted that he did not ask Xi to halt Chinese purchases of Russian oil, despite previously signaling an intent to do so ahead of the meeting.
In Busan, Xi suggested that Beijing and Washington should “work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of their two countries and the whole world.”
“As the world today is confronted with many tough problems, China and the US can jointly shoulder their responsibility as major countries,” he said, according to a Chinese news agency.
The Chinese leader emphasized that Trump is “very enthusiastic” about resolving global conflicts and highlighted that China has consistently promoted peace talks as a tool for crisis resolution.
Xi also reiterated China’s longstanding position on the Ukraine conflict, saying it will continue to encourage negotiations regardless of developments, while warning that “complex problems have no simple solutions.”
Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Russia and China have deepened their strategic ties, with Beijing emerging as a major buyer of Russian oil after Western sanctions. The two countries now describe their relationship as a strategic partnership “without limits.”
