Trump says Zelensky near agreement on US-backed Ukraine peace proposal

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may be approaching agreement on Washington’s plan to end the conflict with Russia.

Speaking from the Oval Office during a meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, Trump told reporters, "We think we have a way of getting peace, he's going to have to approve it. I think they're getting reasonably close, but I don't want to predict."

Earlier the same day, Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv had intensified its dialogue with Washington regarding the American peace outline, following an extended call with the U.S. vice president and senior defense officials.

In a message posted on Telegram, Zelenskyy said the sides “managed to cover a lot of details of the American side’s proposals for ending the war,” and emphasized that Ukraine is working to ensure any agreement is “dignified and truly effective for achieving a lasting peace.”

He expressed appreciation for Washington’s engagement, noting Ukraine’s cooperation with the U.S. and European partners to keep discussions moving forward “at the level of national security advisors to make the path to peace truly doable.”

Zelenskyy added that, “Ukraine has always respected and continues to respect US President Donald Trump’s desire to put an end to the bloodshed, and we view every realistic proposal positively,” and said that both sides agreed to maintain continuous communication, with teams ready to operate “24/7.”

His comments were made as debates continue over the specifics of the U.S.-crafted proposal and Ukraine’s insistence that any settlement must secure a durable and just peace. Trump has previously suggested that Nov. 27 is an "appropriate" date for Kyiv to deliver its response.

In response to reports alleging that Washington warned Kyiv it may lose military and intelligence support if it refused the proposal, a U.S. official stated that "It was strongly implied to the Ukrainians that the United States expects them to agree to a peace deal." The official added, “Any changes will be decided upon by the president himself."
