US-Ukraine talks cut peace plan to nineteen points
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the talks with Ukrainian and European representatives as achieving “tremendous” progress, while acknowledging that further work remains. A joint US-Ukraine statement said the meeting demonstrated “meaningful progress toward aligning positions.”
Sources familiar with the negotiations told a news outlet that nine points were removed from the original draft, though they did not detail which provisions were eliminated. European officials had previously raised objections to certain points regarding sanctions and frozen Russian assets, arguing that those matters fall under EU jurisdiction. Finnish President Alexander Stubb called the reduction a “step forward” but emphasized that several major issues still need resolution.
The 28-point plan, presented by Washington, has been under discussion in Geneva with representatives from the US, Ukraine, and European capitals. Reports indicate that President Trump clarified on Saturday that the current draft would not be his “final offer,” as concerns remain in Kyiv and among allied nations.
According to reports, the draft appears to require Ukraine to cede additional territory to Russia, scale down its military, and formally abandon its aspirations to join NATO. Trump has reportedly given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a deadline of Thursday to respond. Zelenskyy described his dilemma as a choice between “the loss of our dignity or the risk of losing a key partner.”
On Saturday, leaders from nine European countries, along with Japan, Canada, and senior EU officials, voiced worries that the proposed restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces “would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attack.”
