US, Ukraine Weigh Zelenskyy’s Potential Visit
The proposed trip is connected to US President Donald Trump’s initiative to secure a peace deal in Ukraine by the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, according to the report.
Multiple officials with knowledge of the talks confirmed that the decision about Zelenskyy’s potential journey depends on the outcome of ongoing peace negotiations in Geneva.
These Geneva discussions are centered on a contentious 28-point US peace proposal, which would require Ukraine to surrender territory, limit the size of its armed forces, and abandon its aspiration to join NATO.
Although a senior White House official noted that no concrete plans for a visit have been set due to ongoing diplomatic efforts, an alternative scenario being considered is that US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll might travel to meet with Russian representatives instead.
Trump has insisted on receiving a response from Zelenskyy by Thursday and has publicly criticized Ukrainian leaders for showing "zero gratitude" for American efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy remarked that he is confronted with a choice between the "loss of our dignity or the risk of losing a key partner."
