US calls Geneva talks step forward in Ukraine peace effort

(MENAFN) According to reports, the White House said Sunday that high-level peace talks in Geneva represented a “significant step forward” toward a framework aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

The discussions brought together US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, and a senior Ukrainian delegation. Officials described the meeting as an “extensive and productive” review of the latest draft of Trump’s peace plan.

The talks were reportedly “candid and detailed,” with both sides addressing key revisions to the emerging framework. Ukrainian representatives stated that their primary concerns—including security guarantees, long-term economic development, infrastructure protection, freedom of navigation, and political sovereignty—were fully considered.

The White House said: “Ukrainian representatives stated that, based on the revisions and clarifications presented today, they believe the current draft reflects their national interests and provides credible and enforceable mechanisms to safeguard Ukraine’s security in both the near and long term.”

The Ukrainian delegation highlighted advances in strengthened security guarantees, non-aggression commitments, energy-sector stability, and reconstruction as key achievements in the talks.

US officials reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term prosperity remains central to the diplomatic process. Rubio noted that the effort aligns with Trump’s goal of ending a conflict that has caused tens of thousands of civilian deaths, preventing further loss of life through a “durable and enforceable” peace.

The White House statement concluded that both sides welcomed the progress made and agreed to continue consultations, emphasizing that the Geneva meeting marked an important step forward in working toward a comprehensive and lasting resolution.
