Russia launches drone, missile strikes on Ukraine, killing three
According to regional officials, one of the deadly incidents occurred in the Vyshhorod area outside Kyiv, where an attack sparked a fire in a private two-story home. “In the Vyshhorod district, a fire broke out in a private two-story house as a result of an enemy attack.
Unfortunately, a woman born in 1949 died,” Kyiv region governor Mykola Kalashnik said in a message.
Kyiv city officials reported that the assault also injured civilians in the capital. The head of the city’s military administration said at least five people were wounded, with damage concentrated in the Sviatoshynskyi district.
Elsewhere in the country, regional leaders confirmed additional deaths, with one person killed in each of the Khmelnytskyi and Zhytomyr regions.
Emergency services said the attacks extended beyond residential areas, hitting key energy, port, and transport facilities in the Odesa region in southwestern Ukraine, further straining already fragile infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the scale of the assault was unprecedented in recent days.
"Over 650 drones have already been launched ... More than 30 missiles were also used (by Russia)," he wrote in a public statement. He added that air raid sirens remained active across most of the country, noting that at least 13 regions had been affected.
Zelenskyy argued that the strikes reflect Moscow’s ongoing approach to the war. He said the attacks send "an extremely clear signal about Russia’s priorities," accusing the Kremlin of having no intention of ending the conflict. “And that means that the world is not putting enough pressure on Russia. Now is the time to respond. Russia must be pushed toward peace and guaranteed security,” he said, calling for stronger air defenses, additional funding for weapons purchases, and increased supplies of energy equipment.
Ukraine’s acting energy minister said the damage forced nuclear power plants to temporarily reduce electricity generation, highlighting the broader impact on the national power grid.
Later, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that air defense systems intercepted the majority of incoming weapons, shooting down 587 of 635 drones and 34 of 38 missiles launched during the assault.
In neighboring Poland, military authorities said fighter jets were scrambled as a precaution during the strikes in Ukraine, though they later confirmed that Polish airspace was not breached.
Russia’s Defense Ministry, in a separate statement, said it had carried out a large-scale operation targeting Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities and energy infrastructure supporting its operations.
