Zelensky says Kyiv is working towards "final agreement” with US

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday that Kyiv is actively working toward a “final agreement” with the United States to help bring an end to the conflict with Russia, following recent high-level discussions with envoys of President Donald Trump.

“We sense that America wants to reach a final agreement, and from our side, there is full cooperation. Ukraine has never been, and will never be, an obstacle to peace,” Zelenskyy said, noting that his negotiating team, including Rustem Umerov and Andrii Hnatov, returned with strengthened drafts of potential agreements.

While emphasizing diplomatic efforts, Zelenskyy highlighted the ongoing need for international support to protect Ukraine’s infrastructure, particularly urging the provision of air defense missiles and additional funding for weapons to counter attacks on the energy sector.

He also confirmed discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding a recently approved €90 billion ($106 billion) funding package over the next two years, calling the decision “historic” for Ukraine’s national resilience.

On the domestic front, the Ukrainian government is managing an extensive social assistance initiative. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko reported that nearly 18 million individuals applied for the “Winter Support” program, which provides direct aid and is scheduled to remain available through June, with the application deadline coinciding with the Christmas holiday.

The engagement with the Trump administration reflects Ukraine’s efforts to secure its geopolitical position amid potential shifts in US foreign policy. Kyiv has also been focused on locking in long-term financial commitments from the European Union and acquiring military hardware from Western allies to strengthen its negotiating leverage in any forthcoming peace talks.
