Pope Leo XIV Calls for Stronger Measures to End Ukraine War

(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV on Sunday called for stronger international measures to halt the war in Ukraine and appealed for prayers for peace in all conflict zones, including the Middle East.

Addressing the faithful after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff highlighted the severe toll on civilians amid harsh winter conditions. Media reported that Ukraine continues to endure relentless assaults.

“Even in these days, Ukraine continues to be struck by relentless attacks, leaving entire populations exposed to the cold of winter,” he said.

“I follow what is happening with sorrow, I am close to those who suffer, and I pray for them,” the pope continued, emphasizing that the protracted conflict has “ever more serious consequences for civilians,” deepening divisions between communities and making a just, lasting peace increasingly elusive.

“I urge everyone to intensify their efforts to end the war,” he added.

His comments come as Ukrainian and Russian negotiators are set to meet in person in Abu Dhabi, with a second round of US-facilitated talks reportedly planned for next weekend.

Encouraging individuals to promote harmony in daily life, Pope Leo XIV said people should be builders of peace “at home, at school, in sports, everywhere,” stressing that violence must be rejected “neither in words nor in actions.”
