Ukrainian FM says Zelenskyy is ready to meet Putin
Speaking to the Ukrainian online publication European Pravda on Tuesday, Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine is committed to signing the peace plan, which has been under discussion since November last year, as long as the agreement is finalized in a mutually acceptable manner.
The minister highlighted that critical issues—particularly those concerning territorial disputes and the operation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant—remain unresolved. “It is precisely to resolve them that the president is ready to meet with Putin and discuss this,” Sybiha said.
Sybiha also downplayed the need for Zelenskyy to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, stating that “creating parallel tracks is not timely and unnecessary.” He noted that existing negotiating teams, including representatives from both countries’ foreign ministries, are already handling discussions.
Commenting on last week’s trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, Sybiha said there has been measurable progress in negotiations, which facilitated the meetings. Bilateral discussions between Moscow and Kyiv were also held in Abu Dhabi, described as “very complex” but “very focused.”
A separate track of talks involving military representatives from both sides addressed the parameters of a potential ceasefire, including mechanisms for monitoring and verifying compliance. Sybiha confirmed that the 20-point framework is structured as a bilateral document with Ukraine and the US, with a parallel signing process expected for Russia and the US. “As of now, this is exactly the structure that is being discussed, but negotiations are still ongoing. It is a process,” he added.
The remarks indicate that Kyiv is preparing to engage directly with Moscow at the highest level to resolve contentious issues, signaling a willingness to pursue diplomacy even as tensions remain high.
