Macron’s Diplomatic Adviser Visits Moscow to Discuss Ukraine War

(MENAFN) The diplomatic adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron traveled to Moscow this week for discussions with the Kremlin as Paris seeks to maintain its role in ongoing talks related to the war in Ukraine, according to reports.

The adviser, Emmanuel Bonne, met Tuesday with his Kremlin counterpart, Yuri Ushakov, and other Russian officials. The visit coincides with negotiations in Abu Dhabi between Russian and Ukrainian representatives, mediated by the United States, while France continues its diplomatic engagement.

Macron, speaking separately during a visit in France, said that the resumption of dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin "is being prepared," with discussions occurring "at a technical level." He added that the process is conducted "in transparency and in coordination" with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European nations.

The French leader has argued that renewed contact with Putin could help ensure Europe is not sidelined in decisions regarding Ukraine. He and Putin previously held a lengthy phone call in July 2024—their first since late 2022—addressing both the war in Ukraine and Iran’s nuclear program.

Reports also note that in April 2024, the defense ministers of France and Russia spoke by phone on counterterrorism matters following an attack in Moscow.
