Orban Labels Ukraine as “Enemy”
Budapest has resisted the European Union’s efforts to gradually eliminate Russian energy imports as part of sanctions imposed following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
Addressing a campaign rally in the western city of Szombathely on Saturday, Orban accused Ukraine of threatening Hungary’s national security. He stated, “The Ukrainians must stop their constant demands in Brussels to disconnect Hungary from cheap Russian energy.”
He further warned, “As long as Ukraine demands that Hungary be cut off from cheap Russian energy, Ukraine is not simply our opponent, Ukraine is our enemy,” highlighting that households could face steep increases in utility costs.
Orban also reaffirmed his stance against Ukraine joining the EU, claiming that forming a “military or economic alliance” with Kiev “will lead to trouble.” Earlier this week, Hungary revealed plans to file a lawsuit against the EU over what it described as a “suicidal” ban on Russian energy.
Meanwhile, the European Commission is reviewing the 20th sanctions package, which proposes a ban on maritime services related to Russian oil. Last month, the European Council approved a strategy to completely phase out Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.
