Hungary's PM Declares Ukraine 'Enemy'

(MENAFN) Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has publicly designated Ukraine as an adversary following Kiev's push to sever Budapest's access to Russian energy imports.

Hungary continues defying EU efforts to eliminate Russian oil and gas purchases—sanctions implemented after the Ukraine conflict intensified in February 2022.

During a Saturday campaign event in Szombathely, a western Hungarian city, Orban accused Ukraine of threatening his nation's security interests.

"The Ukrainians must stop their constant demands in Brussels to disconnect Hungary from cheap Russian energy," Orban stated.

"As long as Ukraine demands that Hungary be cut off from cheap Russian energy, Ukraine is not simply our opponent, Ukraine is our enemy," he declared, cautioning citizens about potential utility cost explosions.

Orban doubled down on his rejection of Ukraine's EU membership bid, insisting any "military or economic alliance" with Kiev "will lead to trouble." On Monday, Budapest announced litigation against the bloc over what it characterized as a "suicidal" Russian energy prohibition.

The European Commission is currently deliberating a 20th sanctions package targeting maritime services for Russian oil. Last month, the European Council greenlit a strategy to eliminate all remaining Russian gas imports by 2027's conclusion.

Unlike most EU nations, Hungary has blocked weapons shipments to Ukraine and advocates for diplomatic conflict resolution. Orban has repeatedly cautioned that escalation risks full-scale NATO-Russia confrontation.
