Japan’s Prime Minister Emphasizes Stable Relations, Dialogue with China
Noting China’s “importance as a neighboring country,” Takaichi told parliament that her administration “will continue to communicate with China and respond calmly and appropriately from the perspective of our national interests,” according to an official statement.
Delivering her first policy speech since being reelected earlier this week as Japan’s 105th prime minister, the 64-year-old leader emphasized continuity following her Liberal Democratic Party’s landslide win in the snap elections on February 8.
Takaichi also urged a swift end to the Russia-Ukraine war and stated that Tokyo “will support” Kyiv alongside “like-minded countries.” She described Japan’s ties with Moscow as in a “difficult situation” but affirmed that the government’s approach to resolving territorial disputes and concluding a peace treaty “remains unchanged.”
