Poland Condemns Hungary for Obstructing EU Sanctions, Ukraine Support

(MENAFN) Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski sharply criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday, accusing Budapest of undermining European unity by blocking key EU decisions on sanctions against Russia, military funding for Ukraine, and defense reimbursements for EU member states.

Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Sikorski called Hungary’s actions “outrageous, but not surprising,” saying they directly threaten Poland’s security and weaken the EU’s collective response to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

He explained that Hungary is blocking the release of funds from the European Peace Facility, which reimburses EU countries that have supplied military equipment to Ukraine. “This is a blockage of around €7 billion ($8.3 billion),” Sikorski said, noting that Poland alone awaits roughly €500 million (about 2 billion zlotys) for its Armed Forces Modernization Fund. “Despite negotiations, Hungary remains implacable,” he added, accusing Budapest of obstructing support for nations aiding Ukraine.

Sikorski further accused Hungary of violating the principle of European solidarity enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon, claiming that Budapest was using EU decision-making processes to advance internal political agendas and anti-Ukrainian narratives.

He also criticized Hungary for blocking the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia and delaying approval of a major EU loan program for Ukraine, arguing that such actions weaken the EU’s leverage over Moscow and prolong the conflict by allowing continued financial flows to the Kremlin.
