Legal Review Raises Concerns Over International Law Violations by US, Israel

(MENAFN) Legal specialists advising the German parliament have determined that the conflict initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran may breach international law, while also cautioning about possible consequences for Germany, according to media coverage released Sunday.

Based on an analysis requested by the opposition faction The Left, the strikes, “according to prevailing opinion,” infringe upon the ban on the use of force established in the UN Charter, as they are neither defended by claims of self-defense nor sanctioned by the UN Security Council.

Within their 12-page evaluation, the legal authorities assessed whether the possible involvement of US military installations in Germany — such as Ramstein Air Base — in operations targeting Iran could be interpreted as support that might render Germany accountable under international law.

They indicated that this “cannot be ruled out, depending on the specific circumstances,” as reported by a news agency.

The document further stated that a potential breach of the prohibition on the use of force through “indirect use of force” might be examined, emphasizing that American bases are situated on German land rather than sovereign US territory.

Additionally, the analysts referenced a prior parliamentary review concerning Russia’s war in Ukraine, which concluded that the “mere making available” of Belarusian land for Russian military offensives could qualify as complicity or assistance.
