French Minister Criticizes Le Pen, Melenchon Over Ukraine Positions
“For a long time, Jean-Luc Melenchon and Marine Le Pen have chosen their side. And their side is not Ukraine’s,” Barrot said during the political program Franc-jeu.
“They systematically choose to go along with Vladimir Putin and recite his rhetoric,” he said, also accusing them of showing “complacency” toward the Russian leader and expressing “distrust” of the European Union.
Melenchon addressed the war during a news conference on Sept. 23 related to his presidential campaign. He suggested that Europe should “perhaps ask” whether the escalation of Russian threats was connected to Ukraine’s use of long-range strikes. He also stated that “Russia is the invader of Ukraine.”
Barrot, however, accused the founder of the left-wing France Unbowed party of distorting the facts and altering the historical account of the conflict.
“Ukrainian resistance is a struggle for independence, for freedom,” he said, comparing Ukraine’s resistance with the French Resistance during Germany’s occupation.
